Health shakes are fantastic for improving your health and losing a few kilos. But, when temptation for sweet treats strikes, maintaining self-discipline isn’t easy. The trick is to make being healthy so fun that cravings don’t get to you. And one surefire way to do that is by dressing up your shake. Get started with these tips.
1. Add coconut
Sprinkle a layer of desiccated or shredded coconut on top of your shake. First up, your shake will look better – the white will make the green or red appear brighter, because of the contrast. Second up, the coconut will add some flavour and texture, turning your shake into a bit more of an adventure. Thirdly, coconut is bursting with health benefits. It can help to increase good cholesterol, lower bad cholesterol, fight nasty microbes, boost your metabolism and slow down the release of sugar into your blood stream.
2. Add fruit
Turn your health shake into a mini holiday by the sea by adding some slices of fresh fruit and, for fun, an umbrella. Your shake might not have any alcohol in it, but it’ll feel just a tad more like a cocktail. What type of fruit you choose is up to you. Of course, it’ll taste better if it matches the flavour of your shake. If you’re feeling fancy, go for berries such as, strawberries, blueberries or cherries. However, be careful to avoid fruits that are high in fructose for example:
- Melon (watermelon, honeydew etc)
- Paw Paw
3. Add organic cacao nibs
For shakes of the vanilla, chocolate, caramel or nutty variety, a sprinkling of organic cacao nibs can do wonders. Cacao is a renowned super food, packed with all sorts of goodies, including antioxidants and minerals. Just 28 grams of nibs contain a whopping 6% of your iron intake. So, when you’re feeling a bit tired or rundown, they can be a great pick-me-up. Now it’s your turn. How do you decorate your health shakes? Please feel free to share your tips with us. We’d love to hear them.
